A memorial service celebrating the life of Alan E. Huggins, 68, of Granville will be held at 3:00 P.M. Monday, August 25, 2014 at the McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect St., in Granville with Rev. Dr. Stephen H. Applegate officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. prior the service. A private burial will be held in Royal Oak Cemetery in Brookville, Ohio.
Alan, a retired General Motors employee, died Thursday, August 21, 2014 in his home. He was born Feb. 9, 1946 to the late Charles and Sarah Lucile (Sampson) Huggins.
A 1964 Madison Sr. High School graduate in Trotwood, Ohio, Alan was an intellectual and independent person. He earned his B.A. in Philosophy from Ohio University and his Master's in American History at Miami University. The Civil War was his area of concentration both professionally and personally. Most recently, he was transcribing letters from the Civil War for the Granville Historical Society, an affiliation where he enjoyed volunteering. He was also a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, where he sang in the choir and also with Vintage Voices. Alan was a voracious reader and researcher who appreciated the charm of Granville and spending time at Opera House Park.
Surviving are his children, Brian (Beth) Huggins of Dublin, Amanda Kerlee of Columbus, and Melissa (Thomas) Doran of New Jersey; brother, Dale (Beverly Pleskota) Huggins of Kettering; sister, Nancy Huggins of Brookville; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
