Alan F. Montgomery

d. September 3, 2015

A memorial service celebrating the life of Alan F. Montgomery, of Granville, will be held at 2:30 P.M. on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 102 E. Broadway, Granville with Rev. Stephen J. Cramer as celebrant. A private graveside service will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville.

Alan passed away Thursday, September 3, 2015 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center, operated by Hospice of Central Ohio. He was 66 years old and born in Columbus, Ohio to the late John F. and Eva F. Montgomery.

Alan was a 1971 graduate of Denison University where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta. He continued his affiliation with the fraternity serving as secretary and treasurer, house manager, and never missed the traditional pig roast for over 40 years.  Alan was a history buff, knowledgeable, intelligent, well-traveled, and had a dry sense of humor: a true scholar and a gentleman.  He enjoyed trivia, numismatics, and visiting unique natural sites with his family.  Alan loved the beauty of daffodils and day lilies- something inherited from his mother.

A fourth generation lumber businessman, Alan’s career spanned from working summers in the timber mills of Oregon while a student, to employment with the family business,  Montgomery Lumber,  until its closure in 1991. Following employment at Cellar Lumber, Alan returned to the family business at Granville Lumber where he retired in 2013 as vice president.

Surviving are his wife Bonnie, whom he married in 1986; stepson, Christopher Wilde; brothers and sisters-in-law, John R. and Elizabeth Montgomery, David W. Montgomery and Alice Merrill, Malcolm D. Montgomery; sister, Jean F. Montgomery; many nieces and nephews; and his feline favorites, Goldie and Cotton.

Memorial contributions may be made to Foundation for Hospice of Central Ohio, P.O. Box 430, Newark, OH 43058 or Granville Garden Club, P.O. Box 198, Granville, OH 43023.

At Alan’s request there will be no visitation, however, online condolences may be expressed at www.mcpeekhoekstra.com.
