Alberta Ickes

A memorial service for Alberta S. Ickes, 94, of Granville, will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Centenary United Methodist Church, 102 E. Broadway, Granville, with Pastor Bob Long officiating. A private graveside service will be held at Welsh Hills Cemetery in Granville.

Mrs. Ickes died Sunday, July 6, 2008, in Newark, at the Selma Markowitz Care Center, operated by Hospice of Central Ohio. She was born in Granville on September 22, 1913 to the late Samuel J. and Dora Viola (Hankinson) Sipe.

A graduate of Granville High School, Alberta, owned and operated the Ickes Green House on West Broadway, in Granville, with her late husband Myron Ickes, who died October 5, 1986.

An avid reader and quilter, Mrs. Ickes was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Ein Ar Egan Club.

Surviving are her daughters and son-in-law, Martha Brown of Port Orange, Fla and Sukey and Keith Newhouse of Granville; six grandchildren, Morgan Newhouse, Kimberly Payzant, Charles Brown, Tammy Roberts, Andrew Ickes, and Jaimie Ickes; six great grandchildren; sisters, Miss Ruth Sipe of Granville, Mrs. Alyce Copas of Heath, and Ms. Helen Marriott of Newark.

In addition to her parents and husband, Alberta was preceded in death by two sons, Jan "Butch" Ickes and David Ickes, four sisters, and one brother.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in Shepherd Hall at the church.
