Alice Spray

August 21, 1922 — August 3, 2013

A memorial service celebrating the life of Alice Spray, 90, of Newark, formerly of Granville, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at Faith United Methodist Church, 261 E. Main St., Newark with Rev. Jeffrey Perry as celebrant. A private graveside service will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville.

Mrs. Spray was born in Otis, Mass August 21, 1922 to the late Daniel and Lena (Soule) Gage. She died Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Arlington Care Center in Newark.

A graduate of Otis High School, Alice was employed by Denison University and Saga Food Service as kitchen manager where she helped many students with their first job and taught them lessons that helped prepare them for life. People didn't go hungry with Alice around. Her generous spirit and love of cooking and baking, especially pies and Hungarian nut bread, were shared by many. She also shared her needlepoint angels and ceramic Santas that she had made.

Alice was a member of the Women of Faith at Faith United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the American Legion Post #85 Auxiliary, Granville Mother's Club, and Granville Fellowship where she enjoyed Tuesday Canasta and Friday Bridge.

A loving mother and grandmother, Alice is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Robert Daniel Spray of Dublin, Timothy Spray of Newark, Richard and Linda Spray of Blacklick; daughter and favorite son-in-law, Cheryl and Glenn Deweese of Newark; grandchildren, Brett and Angie Deweese, Julie and Tony Shonebarger, Christie Hammond, Kyle and Breana Spray; four step-grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Sybil Robertson, Violet Postle, and Elinor Jean Landis; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Alice was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, John E. Spray, whom she married September 18, 1943, one son, John E. Spray, Jr. who died September 13, 1991, four brothers, and one sister.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect St., Granville. Online condolences may be expressed at www.mcpeekhoekstra.com
