Anne Woodbury Scherwin
1917-2007
A graveside service for Ann Woodbury Scherwin was held at 1:00 p.m. Monday at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville.
Anne was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1917, the youngest child the late Benjamin and Abbie (Geach) Woodbury, formerly of Granville. Anne fondly remembered growing up in Granville on West Elm Street where her family lived until she was six years old. Her father's promotions took them to Oak Park, Illinois for a few years, then to Rochester, New York, where, following the Woodbury tradition of "love of a horse", Anne spent much of her childhood on horseback. She was labeled "ardent equestrienne" by the Rochester newspapers, which regularly carried stories about her accomplishments in dressage and jumping competition. Anne liked to tell about how she met her husband, Thorkel ("Ted") Scherwin of Copenhagen, Denmark, "on the bridal path". They were married in 1938 in London, where they resided until WWII escalated in Europe.
Returning to the States, the couple lived in a charming bungalow in Buffalo, NY before moving back to Rochester to raise two children. The children grown, Anne worked for the town of Brighton, leaving her position as secretary for Meadowview School after 13 years to retire to Shelby, NC in 1973.
An avid reader and talented writer, Anne loved to tour the United States and Canada with groups like the National Wildlife Federation. During her 30 years in Shelby, she and Ted actively volunteered in community, AARP, and Shelby Presbyterian Church projects, together putting in many hours of service with the Cleveland Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Lifetime programs.
In August 2003, ten years after Mr. Scherwin's death, Anne moved to Grace Ridge Retirement Community in Morgantown, NC, where old and new friends gathered with family last Sunday to celebrate 90 years of life. She died at Grace Hospital on her birthday, May 2, 2007. Always a positive person in spite of long illness, Anne maintained her warm smile and wry wit until the very last day.
Surviving are her daughter, Susan Scherwin of Girdwood, Alaska; son, John "Chris" Scherwin and his wife Lucy of The Woodlands, Texas; nephew John Llewellyn and family of Winston-Salem, NC; Niece, Mary Claire Woodbury of St. Louis, MO; granddaughter, Jennifer Scherwin Wysoki and family of Boynton Beach, FL; and grandson, Christopher Scherwin of The Woodlands, TX. Anne was very proud of her only great-grandson, Alex.
In addition to her husband of 55 years, Anne Scherwin was preceded in death by her sister, Jean Woodbury Llewellyn of Southern Pines, NC and her brother John Geach Woodbury of Rochester, NY.
