Betty J. Helling

A funeral service will be held for Betty Jane Helling, 98, of Newark and formerly of Granville, at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 102 E. Broadway, Granville with the Rev. Stephen J. Cramer officiating. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 P.M. at South Lawn Cemetery in Coshocton, Ohio.

Betty was born on November 13, 1914. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Edith (Adams) Burch. She passed away peacefully in her home on March 15, 2013.

Betty graduated from Coshocton High School, as an honor student, in 1932. She earned her nursing degree at Cleveland City Hospital in 1940. Prior to working as a County Health Nurse in the Licking County Health Dept for 23 years, she worked at the old Newark Hospital. She was married to Earl F. Berry from 1940 until his death in 1969. Her second marriage was to Clarence "Dune" Helling from 1974 until his death in 1998. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She had a love of people and serving them, as well as a deep faith in her God. She was a 57 year member of the Granville Centenary United Methodist Church, a member of the Morning Glory Circle, a member of the Blood Pressure Clinic for the Sinnet House, and an Altrusia member for years. She loved writing, and her love of words led her to composing poetry. She also had an interest in art and oil painting.

Survivors include daughter, Mary E. Berry Lyons (Rick Bline) of Utica, OH; son, Earl Charles "Chuck" (Jane) Berry of Newark, OH; step-son, David (Kathy) Helling of Pittsburgh, PA; grandchildren Marcus (Kelly) Lyons, Grant (Lisa) Lyons, Jennifer (Jeff) Bachelor, Nicole (Matthew) Amole, Mathew (Shelli) Lyons, Ryan (Anita) Berry, and Barbara Thompson; great and great-great grandchildren, Whitney (Bob) Pagani, Tyler and Abby Lyons, Brayden and Britton Bachelor, MacKenna and Spencer Amole, Morgan and Mason Berry, Alec Johnson, Ashley, Ryleigh, Brennen, and Breidyn Burch, and Francesca Pagani; nieces and nephews, Susan and Cameron Robertson and family, Janet and Pat Masimer and family, Debbie and Jim Guy and family, Linda and Steve Marks, Catherine Waggoner and family, Tom and Carolyn Berry and family, and Robert DeGendt and family; caretaker, Susan West; beloved pets, Pinkie and DoDo; and many wonderful friends, as well as her church family.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Rose Lee Burch (Richard) Spray; brothers, William and Thomas Burch; son-in-law, Paul Lyons; and great grandsons, Cody Johnson and Michael Burch.
