A memorial service for Blanche Hampton Wheeler, 91, a Granville resident since 1948, will occur at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 7, at the First Presbyterian Church, 110 W. Broadway, Granville, with the Rev. Karen Chakoian officiating. Private graveside services will take place at the College Cemetery at Denison University. Mrs. Wheeler died in her sleep on July 2, 2009, at SharonBrooke, her residence for the past 17 months.
She was born March 17, 1918, in Galax, Virginia, to the late William L. and Ella M. Blevins Hampton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel C. Wheeler, Jr., by her parents, and by two brothers and eight sisters.
She graduated from Amity High School in 1936 and studied art and home economics three years at Ohio State University and art for years at Denison University. She was a member of the Licking County Artists Association, Friends of the Granville Public Library, the First Presbyterian Church, the Zanesville Art Center, and other organizations in support of art and lifelong education. Her wood sculpture has been exhibited throughout Central Ohio; some of her sculptures are in the permanent collection of the Zanesville Art Center and in many private homes in the area. She is survived by four sons and three daughters-in-law: Samuel C., III, and Pamela B. Wheeler, Willington, CT; Philip H. and Sue A. Wheeler, Rochester, MN; Thomas B. and Eileen W. Wheeler, Canton, NY; and William J. Wheeler, Silver Spring, MD; two daughters and son-in-law: Patricia Wheeler and Allan J. Andrews, St. Anthony, MN, and Margaret J. Wheeler, Potsdam, NY; seven grandchildren; one sister, Elsie Hampton Jones; one brother and sister-in-law, Andrew H. (Dick) and Eloise Hampton; and many nieces, and nephews.
