Charles F. Metzger

A memorial service for Charles F. Metzger, 83, of Granville, will be held at 7:00 p.m. on April 27, 2008 at Swasey Chapel on the Denison University campus, with a reception following in the Welsh Hills Room of the Burton D. Morgan Bldg. A private graveside service will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville.

Charly, a retired advertising and marketing executive, died at home April 13, 2008. His advertising career spanned four decades including 11 years on Madison Avenue in New York City. He moved from New Canaan, Conn., to Granville in 1971 to become director of Marketing Services for Borden, Inc. in Columbus. He founded his own agency, Metzger Marketing Communications in 1980 in Granville.

He was born October 1, 1924 in Wilkes Barre, PA to the late Charles F. and Margaret (Rogan) Metzger. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing from Syracuse University in 1947, where he was president of the freshman class, president of Psi Upsilon fraternity and captain of the varsity lacrosse team. An Army Pfc. during WWII, he fought as a machine gunner in the 88th Division, 349th Infantry, 1st Battalion, C Company, in northern Italy.

Charly was an active citizen in Granville and was awarded the Granville Rotary 2008 Service Above Self Award. He was a member of the Granville Library Board, Granville Rotary, Granville Township Zoning Commission (6 years), Co-Chair of the Granville Comprehensive Plan Committee (1997) and Granville Comprehensive Plan Review Committee (2000). He served as Committee Co-Chair of two successful Granville School Levies, Chair of the Granville Village/Township Merger Study Committee, founder of the Granville Platform Tennis Club, member of the Granville Tennis Club and Granville Town and Country Club.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Fleur (Woods) Metzger; four children, Lisa (Phil) Drake of Upper Arlington, Julie (Doug) Baker of Edina, Minn, Laura (Jay) Wigdale of Milwaukee, Wis, and Charles F. Jr. (Wendy) Metzger of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; 14 grandchildren, Ben, Zachary and Alex Drake; Doug III, Will, and Laura Baker; Lindsey, Jack, Charlie, and Ellie Wigdale; Anna, Margaret, Charles III, and Joe Metzger.
