Charlotte Chotlos

Granville

Charlotte Chotlos passed away in her sleep in Madison, Wisconsin on April 8th, 2022.  Although she had recently moved to Wisconsin to live near her son Paul and his family, she never stopped being from Ohio.  Born in Cleveland in 1929, Charlotte Hawn grew up in Marietta, one of five children.  Her father, “Doc Hawn,” and her mother, Martha Schuler Hawn, had property on a high bluff overlooking the Ohio River.  As a girl, Charlotte enjoyed living “on the hill,” riding the family horses, and feeding the chickens.  Later on, after enrolling at Marietta College, Charlotte met Irvine “Gunnar” Chotlos. Gunnar served in the Army Corp of Engineers during World War II, and along with friends from Sharon, PA, attended college on the “GI Bill.”  Charlotte loved Gunnar because he was kind, thoughtful, and funny.   They were married in 1950.  As a young married couple, they moved to Granville, Ohio.  Gunnar worked as a history teacher and golf coach for 37 years; they enjoyed raising two children, Elaine and Paul.  After Gunnar retired from teaching, they sold the big house on Granger Street and moved to a condominium in Newark, enjoying a quiet and comfortable retirement.  Gunnar passed away in 2002, and Charlotte successfully adjusted to living on her own, continuing to be very outgoing and independent.  Charlotte enjoyed meeting people and socializing.  She was active in the Granville Methodist Church.  She loved gardening, going to exercises, bridge, quilting, and traveling.  When Charlotte visited her three grandchildren in Wisconsin, she liked to bring an extra suitcase full of craft supplies and games. She was a talented artist and always enjoyed using bright colors.  She loved her children and grandchildren.  For many years, the family got together at Christmas and in summers for long visits and reconnecting.

Charlotte’s immediate family consists of her daughter Elaine Hutchins, her son in law, Rance Hutchins; her son Paul Chotlos, daughter in law Deb Chotlos; granddaughter, Anna Chotlos; grandson, Nate Chotlos; and grandson, Matt Chotlos.

According to Charlotte’s wishes, the family is planning a life celebration to be held at McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home in Granville at 11:00 am on Friday July 8th, 2022. Casual attire is fine.

For those interested, in lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Communion Fund at the First Baptist Church of Madison, 518 N. Franklin Ave. Madison, WI 53705.  The fund is used to help people with necessities like rent, food and gas.  Contributions can also be made to the Granville Historical Society, P.O. Box 129, Granville, OH 43023 or via their website at granvillehistory.org.
