Clara Irene Slutyak Prine

September 23, 1931 — August 3, 2008

A memorial service celebrating the life of Clara Irene Slutyak Prine, 76, of Granville, OH will be held Saturday, August 9 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 110 W. Broadway, Granville with the Rev. Karen Chakoian officiating.

Clara passed away peacefully on August 3, 2008 at Kendal Health Center in Granville after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born September 23, 1931 in Duquesne, PA to John and Helen (Potoma) Slutyak. A graduate of Duquesne High School, she received her R.N. diploma in 1953 from the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, PA, and worked after graduation as a surgical nurse. She married Calvin Kerr Prine on Feb. 28, 1959 in Pittsburgh and moved with him to Granville, OH where he served as Denison University's first development officer.

Clara retired from Denison University after 15 years as a staff nurse at Whisler Hospital. A 45-year member of the First Presbyterian Church, she served as an Elder and as volunteer Financial Secretary for 15 years. She was on the Board of Trustees of the Granville Public Library, a member of the Licking County Bar Association Auxiliary and a volunteer nurse screener for the Red Cross Bloodmobile blood drives. An enthusiastic resident of Kendal at Granville, Clara served as archivist during the Residents Association's first year.

Clara was an avid reader, an advocate for education and a supporter of the arts. In addition to adding regularly to the Charles W. Prine '15 and Family Endowment for scholarships at Denison University, she and her husband established two musical endowments: one to sustain Classical Music on WOSU-FM and the other to benefit the music program of the First Presbyterian Church in Granville.

In addition to her husband, Clara is survived by daughters and sons-in-law: Cynthia and Robert Averill, III of Wappingers Falls, NY and Carolyn and Peter Freedman of East Windsor, NJ; seven grandchildren: Rob, Courtney and Lindsay Averill and Ethan, Darren, Austin and Galen Freedman, all at home. She is also survived by her sister Eugenia Slutyak Longcrier of Duquesne, PA, a brother-in-law Charles W. Prine and his wife Elizabeth of Pittsburgh, PA and a sister-in-law Mary Helen Prine Kelly of Tempe, AZ. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John, Jr. and Eugene Slutyak, of Duquesne, PA.

The family will receive friends at a reception held in the church Heritage Hall immediately following the memorial service. Graveside services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Clara and Calvin Prine Endowed Music Fund of the First Presbyterian Church; to the Prine Endowed Scholarship at Denison University; the Kendal at Granville Residents Assistance Fund, 2158 Columbus Road, Granville, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

The family is grateful for special assistance from Kendal's Skilled Nursing Staff, Hospice of Central Ohio and the McPeek Funeral Home.
