A memorial service celebrating the life of Coleen Melton Messenger Pitt will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, August 23, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church, 110 W. Broadway, Granville with the Rev. Karen J. Chakoian as celebrant. A reception will follow in Heritage Hall at the church.
Mrs. Pitt was born in Gaffney, SC to the late Laura Wood Melton and Guilford Sylvester Melton in 1920. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband James Ludlow Messenger.
A graduate of Limestone College in South Carolina, Coleen worked in Washington D.C. with the Signal Corps during World War II. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Granville where she served as a ruling elder. She was also a member of Granville Garden Club and volunteered at Licking Memorial Hospital for several years.
Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Robert Stewart Pitt; three daughters and their spouses, Susan Pitt and Gregg Oehler of Warwick, RI, Ann and Roger Waldon of Chapel Hill, NC, and Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes and Corvis Catsouphes of Lexington, MA; one son, James Messenger and his wife Patti, or Lexington, MA; grandchildren, Jeffrey Oehler, Emily Costigan, Matthew and Christopher Waldon, Marcus and Jaymeson Catsouphes and Jay and Laura Messenger; great grandson, Liam Costigan and one brother, Vernon Melton of Gaffney, SC.
