Dale A. Kern

January 11, 1917 — November 18, 2009

A private memorial service for Dale A. Kern, 92, of Granville, formerly of Berea, will be at the McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect St., Granville. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville with military honors provided by Licking County Veterans Alliance.  Mr. Kern was most recently a resident at SharonBrooke in Newark.

Mr. Kern, a retired principal of Middlebrook Elementary School in Berea, died Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at Licking Memorial Hospital in Newark.  He was born in Slatington, PA on Jan. 11, 1917 to the late Dr. H.B. (Harry) and Elizabeth (Hopkins) Kern.

During WWII, Dale proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy.  He was a 1941 graduate of Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA and received his Masters Degree in Education from Case-Western Reserve.  Mr. Kern was also a member of the American Legion Post 398 in Granville.  Dale will always be remembered by his family as a loving, feeling father.

Surviving are his sons and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Kathryn Kern of Granville, and Gregory Kern of Olmsted Falls; daughter, Kristina Schra of Clearwater, Fla; stepchildren and their spouses, Kathie Heller of Pasadena, California, Terry and Laury Irwin of Marietta, Patricia and Rudy Biehl of Marietta, Evelyn and Donald Bryant of Oberlin, and Dana and Karen Irwin of Westerville; and 15 grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Marcielle C. "Marcie" Kern who died Sept. 28, 2000; and two brothers.
