David M Nessley

August 17, 1922 — February 13, 2012

David M. Nessley, Sr., age 89, of Columbus, Ohio died peacefully at The Woodlands on February 13, 2012. He was born August 17, 1922 to Arlington and Clara Grace (Slough) Nessley at Linville, Ohio.

He was preceded in death just this last September by his wife of 43 years, Virginia M. Nessley. Also predeceased by first wife, Norma Nessley; brothers, Steve (Margaret), Richard (Betty), Robert (Carol), and Ed (Dolly) Nessley; sisters, Eleanor (Jack) Main, Georgia (Valley) Valentine; niece, Peggy Valentine; son-in-law, Craig Copenhefer; and stepson, Paul Cosner.

He is survived by children, David M. Nessley Jr, and Jan (George) Tully; step daughter, Sharon Sellitto; grandchildren, Jonathan Nessley, Jason Tully, Sarah (Adrian)Garza; and great granddaughter, Mia Garza. Also, survived by many more dear relatives and friends.

Dave graduated from Reynoldsburg High School in the class of 1941. He rode his bicycle from Whitehall to class every day. Sergeant Nessley was in the 2nd Marine Division, U. S. Marine Corps, Alpha Co., 6th Marine Regiment, 3rd Battalion from 1941 to1945. He fought throughout the Pacific Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #3, American Legion Post 792, and VFW Post 9473. Also, Dave was a Charter Member of the WWII Memorial Society and was entered into the WWII Memorial Registry of Remembrances. He retired with 30 years of service from the Defense Construction Supply Center as a gunsmith.

He was a lifelong member of the Reynoldsburg United Methodist Church and a member of the Reynoldsburg Alumni Association. He was a proud Reynoldsburg Boy Scout leader for many years. Dave could always be counted on to extend a helping hand if you had a problem or needed something fixed.

To honor Dave's wishes there will be no services and interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. at a later date. Memorial contributions in his memory to Honor Flight of Columbus, 2185 Ridgecliff Rd., Columbus, OH 43221 (whose mission is to take WWII and Korean War Vets to Washington D.C.) would be treasured.
