Donald R. Bateman

Visitation for Donald R. Bateman, 91, of Granville, will be held Wednesday, December 18, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect St., Granville. Burial will be at a later date at Kenyon Cemetery in Gambier, Ohio.

Don passed away Thursday, December 12, 2013 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center, operated by Hospice of Central Ohio, in Newark. He was born March 24, 1922 in Mt. Vernon, Ohio to the late John J. and Mary (Lorena) Bateman.

A graduate of Kenyon College, Don continued his education at The Ohio State University, where he earned his Ph.D. in Humanities. He was known as 'Don" by his students, and retired in 1985 from The Ohio State University, College of Education as Professor Emeritus after a 30 year career.

A WWII veteran, Don proudly served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed bird watching, tennis, organic gardening, photography, and bread baking. The most inspiring, devoting, loving, and caring person to have as a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, teacher, mentor, and friend, Don will be profoundly missed by all.

Surviving are his bride of 65 years, Marion (Flecknoe) Bateman; children, Susan Bateman, Katherine Faria, Anne Waggoner, and Marcus Bateman; six grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his son, Christopher Bateman who died in 1973.
