Donald F. Messick

A memorial service for Donald F. Messick, 79, of Granville, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Centenary United Methodist Church, 102 E. Broadway, Granville with the Rev. Stephen J. Cramer officiating.

A private family graveside service will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery with military honors provided by the Licking County Veteran's Alliance.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Shepherd Hall at Centenary United Methodist Church.

Don died Sunday, June 14, 2009, at the Heritage Unit, operated by Hospice of Central Ohio. He was born March 6, 1930 in Jacksontown, OH to the late Curtis W. and Mae (Brookover) Messick.

A 1948 graduate of Granville High School, Don enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Bexar, a troop transport ship, during the Korean War. He was Head of HVAC and Maintenance at Lucent and retired after 30 years of service in 1985.

Don was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees. He loved boating, water skiing and bicycling. He will fondly be remembered as a handyman who repaired many things for family and friends. He also enjoyed gardening and farming.

Surviving are his wife Harriett (Wells) Messick whom he married November 21, 1952, daughters and sons-in-law, Sondra and Harry Hottinger of Heath, OH, Sally Messick of Granville and Holly and Michael Maloy of Franklin, NC, and daughter-in-law, Julie Todd Messick of Richmond, VA; grandchildren, Anna, Georgie, Mary Frances, Hattie, and Chip Messick, Jonathan and Shannon Hottinger all of Richmond, VA, Andrew Hottinger of Heath, OH, Hannah and Madeline Maloy of Franklin, NC; and favorite canine companion, Punky.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by one son, Rodney Curtis Messick, who died in 2006 and two brothers, Robert and Leland Messick.
