Donald B. Snelling

A funeral service for Donald B. Snelling, 55, of Granville, will be held at 12:30 P.M. Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 102 E. Broadway, Granville with Rev. Stephen J. Cramer officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Newark.

Don died Thursday, January 06, 2011, unexpectedly at his home. He was born July 24, 1955 in Newark to the late William E. and Mary Lou (Pethtel) Snelling.

A 1973 Granville High School graduate, Don was proprietor and cook at the Aladdin Restaurant in Granville before recently retiring. He began his career in the restaurant business when he was 10 working for his mother busing tables and eventually cooking. It wasn't until the mid 1990's he purchased the business and continued the family legacy.

Don was a member of the Granville Kiwanis, Federal Democratic Party, Big Red Touchdown Club, Blue and White Club, and the Granville Athletic Club. He was a huge sports enthusiast and very devoted to the Granville Blue Aces. Don was scorekeeper for the Granville basketball team for over 25 years and sold tickets at all the home football games. He enjoyed taking care of the Blue Aces as he frequently fed the football players at his restaurant.

Surviving are his brothers, Bill (Diane) Snelling of Newark, Frank Snelling of Newark, and Fred (Sis) Snelling of Frazeysburg; sisters, Becky (Jeff) Debevoise of Newark, Gina Snelling of Thornville, and Betsy Snelling of Thornville; "adopted" son, Kyle Abbott of Newark; "adopted" grandchildren, Abigail, Issac, and Silas; eight nieces and nephews; and feline companion, "Celine".

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one nephew, Zachary Snelling.

The family will receive friends Monday , January 10, 2011 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the church . Arrangements are in the care of MCPEEK-HOEKSTRA FUNERAL HOME in Granville. To ensure family acknowledgement of guestbook entries, please express all online condolences at www.mcpeekhoekstra.com.
