Dorothy Dawes Young was born June 9, 1924 in Wilmington, Delaware to Col. David Harold Young and Dorothy Dawes. The family then moved to Bexley, Ohio where Dorothy attended school graduating from Bexley High School in 1941. She attended Florida State College For Women (now Florida State) in Tallahassee FL graduating in 1945 with a major in History. It was shortly after that in Evanston, Illinois that she met on a blind date, the love of her life, Richard Walter Mann, a decorated Naval Officer and pilot. They were married July 20, 1946 in Evanston Illinois. In their 61 years together Dorothy and Richard lived a full and rich life, travelling all over the world, visiting friends and family, and making many more friends along the way. Their numerous adventurous bicycle trips to various locations in the United States and England were a great source of enjoyment to them. Dorothy joined the Dawes Arboretum Board of Trustees in 1958 and served as Chairwoman from 1975-1982. Her lifelong love of Daweswood and nature began in her earliest years as she spent much time with her grandparents and the founders, Beman and Bertie Dawes. After her retirement from the board she continued as Honorary Trustee, contributing her talents and love of plants as well as her historical knowledge of the Dawes family up to the very end of her life. She, most recently, was very involved in Milo Arts of Columbus OH, contributing her support.
Dorothy's sense of adventure and curiosity was evident to all who met her. She genuinely enjoyed people and was very curious and interested in their lives and thoughts. She was a great example of these numerous rich qualities to her three children, her eleven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, as well as a few very close friends she informally "adopted" as family. Dorothy was also a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Granville Ohio for over 50 years.
Her husband, Richard Walter Mann, preceded her in death in 2007. She is survived by her three children, Richard W Mann Jr. of Columbus OH, David H Mann of Saltillo Mexico, Dorothy Mann Steciw (husband, Roman) of High Point NC. Also, grandchildren Luke Mann of AZ, Peter Mann of FL, David Mann Jr. of Uganda, Dustin Mann of MI, Stephen Steciw of WA, Sally Steciw of OH, Nate Mann (Amy) of GA, Elsa Mann (Josh) of KY, Paul Steciw (Caitie) of TN, Rebecca Steciw of GA, and Dorothy Mann of Mexico. Great-grandchildren are Sierra Mann of AZ, Peter Mann of MI, Carina Devaney of KY, and Lily Steciw of TN. Also, Jeff Swartz and family, and Takeyuki Shiomi. Memorial contributions can be made to The Dawes Arboretum, 7770 Jacksontown Road SE, Newark OH, 43056, or The First Presbyterian Church of Granville OH.
