A funeral service was held for Dr. Charles A. Schacht, 71, of Granville at the McPeek Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect Street, Granville, Ohio with the Rev. Stephen H. Applegate officiating. A private graveside service was held in Ansonia Cemetery in Ansonia, Ohio.
Charles died April 10, 2007 at home. He was born April 14, 1935 in Oregon, Ohio to the late Lawrence and Dorothy (Welsh) Schacht.
The son of a railroad blacksmith, Dr. Schacht was the first in his family to attend college. His interest in science led him to Capital University for two years and then on to The Ohio State University where he earned his Civil Engineering Degree in 1960. While at Ohio State he met his future wife Sue Ellen Whittington. They then moved to Pittsburgh where he furthered his education at Carnegie Mellon University, earning his Masters and completing his PhD in Civil Engineering in 1972.
After spending his first decade of work in Pittsburgh with a private consulting firm and U.S. Steel, Dr. Schacht's fascination with the materials of refractories led him to start his own consulting firm, Schacht Consulting, Inc. He is known throughout the steel industry for his expertise in the design of refractory linings. His successes led him to travel all over the world to consult for the steel industry. He holds two patents involving refractories and has published two books; Refractory Linings, Thermomechanical Design and Applications and Refractories Handbook. He authored numerous papers on refractory structures and refractory lined industrial vessels and lectured worldwide.
Dr. Schacht was a member of the American Assoc. of Civil Engineers, American Assoc. of Ceramic Engineers, Studebaker Society and the Elks Lodge.
Charles was an avid golfer, master woodworker, and his passion was restoring Studebakers.
Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law Gretchen E. and Keith A. Hollingsworth of Granville; son, Charles D. Schacht of Seattle, WA; two grandchildren, Emma Sue and Samuel J. Hollingsworth; one brother, Lawrence Schacht of Luckey, OH and two sisters, Ruth Gloria of Genoa, OH and Beverly Newell of Toledo, OH.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his wife who died in 1989.
