Effie Jean Gregg

Effie Jean Wright (Bernard) Gregg, age 88, of Newark, passed away on Thursday, April 27, 2023 at the Inn at SharonBrooke. The daughter of the late Russell W. and Merle (Zellers) Wright, Jean was born April 17, 1935 in Casey, Illinois. She was a 1954 graduate of Newark High School.

Jean married Charles W. Gregg, Sr. in 1983 and the couple moved to Kissimmee, Florida where they lived for 20 years before returning to Newark in 2004. Jean worked in retail sales and did home childcare. She loved all her babies. She also worked with the Meals on Wheels and Young Unwed Mothers groups in Kissimmee. Jean was a wonderful seamstress and in later years she was an avid quilter, having made several quilts.

She is survived by her husband, Charles W. Gregg, Sr.; four children, Donald (Kim) Bernard of Raleigh, North Carolina, Daniel (Janet) Bernard of Satellite Beach, Florida, Tim Bernard of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Patricia Bernard of Newark; two grandsons; three granddaughters; seven great-grandchildren; step-son, Charles (Dona) Gregg of Canal Winchester; and a step-grandson; siblings, Patty Ronan, Jim (Connie) Wright, all of Newark; sisters-in-law, Hilda Wright, of Newark.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers and sister-in-law, Jack and Pat Wright and brother, Bill Wright; sister, Dottie Sue Thompson; former husband, Ralph D. Bernard; and brother-in-law, Jim Ronan.

A private family graveside service will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the March of Dimes.
