A memorial service for Libbie Smith, 89, of Granville, will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 110 W. Broadway, Granville with the Rev. Karen Chakoian officiating. A private graveside service will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville.
Libbie passed away April 1, 2009 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center, operated by Hospice of Central Ohio. She was born August 8, 1919 in Homer, Ohio to the late Orin and Flora (Wright) Smythe.
A graduate of Homer High School, Libbie was an expert seamstress and knitter. She sewed costumes for the Denison University Theater Department in the 1940s and began doing alterations at the James Store in the 1950s. After retiring from the James Store, she established Libbie's Yarns and Alterations in Granville, which she operated from her home until her passing.
Libbie will be fondly remembered for her kindness and assistance to many area residents. She was a much loved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her legacy will live on in us all.
Surviving are her daughters, Paula E. Foster of Oceanside, CA and Kristin A. Prahin of Granville; grandchildren, Bradley D. (Suzuanne) Foster of Trabuco Canyon, CA and Maureen R. Foster of Encinitas, CA, Aaron S. Prahin of Columbus, OH, Marsinah (Glenn) B. Gillespie of Cincinnati, OH, Wendy Smith of Louisville, KY, and Farrah E. Smith of Los Angeles, CA; and great granddaughter, Olivia G. Smith of Louisville, KY.
In addition to her parents, Libbie was preceded in death by her husband, Austin Smith, who died in 1995; one son, Steven Smith; and sisters, Harriet Smythe, Sarah Phillips, and Mary Megaw.
