Eva Fitch Montgomery
June 8, 1912 — January 15, 2011
A memorial service celebrating the life of Eva F. Montgomery, 98, of Newark will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 102 E. Broadway, Granville with Rev. Stephen J. Cramer officiating. Mrs. Montgomery died Saturday, January 15, 2011 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center operated by Hospice of Central Ohio. She was born June 8, 1912 in Villa Nova, Ontario, Canada, to the late Ernest R Fitch and Pearle Lamont Fitch.
A 1934 graduate of Denison University, Mrs. Montgomery studied mathematics, but was a botanist at heart. She most especially enjoyed daffodils and daylilies and took "expeditions" to various places in the US and Canada to see free range orchids and other special botanicals, like the orchids in the Bruce Peninsula in Canada and the rare Lakeside Daisy on the Niagara escarpment. At the slightest enticement she would be off in pursuit of some unusual botanical. When not searching in the field, she could be found enjoying needlework, crossword puzzles, and ball games.
She was a long time member of the Granville Garden Club providing many specimens for the annual April Daffodil Show. She was also a member of Alpha Phi Sorority and Monday Talks.
Surviving are her daughter, Jean F. Montgomery of Potomac MD; sons and daughters-in-law: John R. and Elizabeth Montgomery of Houston, TX, David W. Montgomery and Alice Merrill of Plainfield, VT, Alan F. and Bonnie Montgomery of Granville, and Malcolm D. Montgomery of Palouse, WA; seven grandchildren: Eva Marie Evans, John F. Montgomery, Susannah R Christy, Loretta Diffee, Harold Merrimont, Ernest Merrimont, Chris Wilde; 8 great grandchildren: John M and Catherine Evans, Lindsay and Hillary Montgomery, Cassandra and Jeremy Diffee, Nora and Rosalea Christy.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Montgomery was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, John F. Montgomery, who died November 22, 1997; by 2 brothers, Milton and Ernest Fitch, and by a sister, Shirley Fitch Colthart.
