Harriett Ann Yates

A funeral service celebrating the life of Harriett Ann Yates, 81, of Newark, formerly of Granville, will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, October 12, 2012 at the McPEEK-HOEKSTRA FUNERAL HOME, 133 S. Prospect St., Granville with Rev. Scott Murphy as celebrant. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Alexandria.
Harriett died Monday, October 8, 2012 at Chestnut House in Newark. She was born in Newark February 5, 1931 to the late Mary Martha (Warnock) and Berlin Edward Vandevender.
A 1950 graduate of Newark High School, Harriett attended many courses and seminars in connection with her work in management with the Department of the Air Force. She retired in 1988 as a Certification Specialist from the Newark Air Force Base after serving 37 years, three years in France, eight years in Washington D.C., and 26 years in Heath.
Harriett was a member of Newark Heights Church of God, and formerly active with the traveling group of Sinnett House sponsored by Granville Fellowship, and served as trustee and president of Shepardson Condominium Homeowner Association.
Surviving are her step-grandchildren and spouses, Sterling Kevin and Leanne Yates, and Jennifer (Yates) and Sean Doherty; step-great-grandchildren, Tristan, Kailey, Ryan, Ethan, and Addison; several nieces and nephews; many cousins; and her friends, the Streicher family, to whom she became a "foster" grandmother.
In addition to her parents, Harriett was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Lee Yates, who died in 1994; one step-son; one sister; four aunts; one uncle; one cousin; and several nieces and nephews.
