Harry J Bendick

Harry J. Bendick, Jr. died suddenly on July 4, despite heroic efforts by the Newark Fire Department's EMS unit and Licking Memorial Hospital's staff.

Harry was born November 22, 1944 in Cleveland to Lt. Col. Harry J. Bendick and Mildred Schaubert Bendick. His family moved to Newark when he was six years old, and he graduated in 1962 from Newark High School. He attended The Ohio State University.

He married Joyce Holman in September, 1966. They lived in Newark, Ft. Wayne, Indiana and Ypsilanti, Michigan before moving to Granville in 1980, where they lived until 2004.

Harry worked for many years at Structurlite Plastics/Caine Corp., where he became Vice President of Engineering. He also worked at Ford Motor Company's Plastics Development Applications Office, where he helped to develop many safety and fuel-economy improvements. He held three patents for plastics applications. His proudest accomplishment was his part in helping to develop the Stealth fighter Jet.

Harry was known for his intelligence, his quick wit, his generous spirit, and his creativity. He loved reading, woodworking, and his Old English Sheepdogs Cholomondeley and Wolsey. He was very interested in the Duke of Wellington, and travelled to the Great Duke's home at Stratfield Saye and his place of death at Walmer Castle. He was a life member of the Friends of St. George's Chapel and Descendants of Knights of the Garter.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one niece. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; brother, Lee; brothers-in-law, Richard and Denny Holman; sisters-in-law, Lynn Holman, Nan Thiel, and Lisa Holman; several nieces and nephews; two great-nieces; and angel, Tracy Clay.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 P.M. Friday, July 8, at McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home, Granville. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, July 9. Online condolences may be expressed at www.mcpeekhoekstra.com
