Herbert Byron Ailes, of Granville, passed away April 12, 2021 at Smith’s Mill in New Albany at the age of 90. He was born in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania to the late Herbert Leo and Dorothy Pauline Milliken Ailes.
A chemical engineer, Herb began his career with Standard Oil in Philadelphia and relocated to Granville in 1961. He was employed by Owens Corning, Houdiall Company, and was president of Premix. He was a graduate of the University of Michigan in 1952 with a BSE and proudly pledged Alpha Tau Omega fraternity there in 1948. He also attended Harvard Business School. Herb was honored by the Society of Plastics Engineers, as Man of the Year and developed many patents while at Owens Corning. He was also the principal driver behind instituting major basic infrastructure improvements (medical and firehouse services) to his beloved Kiawah, South Carolina community.
Herb enjoyed tennis at Spring Valley, coached little league baseball, and loved to golf. He traveled the world with family and friends playing every course, major and minor, he could. He also created an extensive genealogical record of the Ailes Family Ancestors and traveled to many of the familial locations personally. Herb adored his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, was intelligent, and will be remembered for his sense of humor. A sports enthusiast, Herb never missed a chance to cheer his favorite Michigan Wolverines.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Barbara; children, Linda G. Ailes and Todd H. (Laura Sundin) Ailes; grandchildren, Benjamin (Catherine) Robertson, Lucas (Emily Brodie) Robertson, Kyle H. (Jetton) Ailes, and Keith R. Ailes; great grandchildren, Lucas, Miles, Brody, and Trace; stepchildren, Steve (Dena), Peter (Susan), Alex, and Philip (Lori) Blum; step grandchildren, Nick, Kayla, Cody, Tyler (Kristina), Alex, Zach, Lindsey (Kevin), Danielle (Blake), Nathan, and nieces, Lisa, Beth, and Julie.
In addition to his parents, Herb was preceded in death by his brother, David, daughter-in-law, Karen Felumlee Ailes, step daughter, Andrea Weiss and step daughter-in-law, Tracey Blum.
A memorial service celebrating Herb’s life will be held at 11:30 A.M. Thursday, April 22, 2021 on the rear lawn of McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect St., Granville with Rev. Karen Chakoian as celebrant. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9-11:00 A.M. prior to the service.
