Herb was born in the family home, in Granville, Ohio. He enjoyed playing high school football for the Granville Blue Aces and working at the Granville Golf Club. After graduation, Herb worked for a short time at Kaiser Aluminum until he was called to serve during the Korean War. He enlisted in the Air Force and did his basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas. From there, he was stationed at F.E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne, Wyoming as an Airman 1st Class. After leaving the military, Herb attended and graduated from the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. By this time, the first two of five sons had been born (Ralph and Herb Jr.). Next, they moved to Newark, Ohio, where they lived for seven years. Two more sons were added to the family during these years (Stephen and Glenn). In 1967, the family moved to a small farm north of Granville where Mark was the final addition to the family. Herb loved his farm, gardening, raising cattle, traveling with his family to Victor, Colorado. He was a faithful member of the Church of Christ, most recently West End Church of Christ in Newark.
