A memorial service celebrating the life of Howard K. Norris, Sr., 95, of Granville, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 13, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church, 110 W. Broadway, Granville with Rev. Karen J. Chakoian officiating.
Howard died Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at the Kendal at Granville. He was born August 9, 1916 in Peoria, IL to the late Charles S. and Edna (Sheehan) Norris.
Howard was the oldest of five siblings, four brothers and one sister. He and his family moved to Chicago, IL in 1927 where he graduated from Senn High School in 1934. He worked the Chicago and San Diego Worlds Fair from 1934 -1935.
A 1939 graduate from the University of Illinois, Howard was president of the local chapter and Assistant National Secretary of the Alpha Chi Rho Fraternity. He played the French horn a total of eight years in high school and in the University of Illinois marching bands and orchestra. After graduation, Howard moved to New York and began a 37 and a half year career with the U.S. Rubber and subsequently, Uniroyal Company. He taught business organization for 3 years at Rutgers University. He retired in 1977 and moved to Virginia.
Howard was formerly married to Mrs. Florence S. (Grant) Norris who preceded him death. They had four children, two girls and twin boys. He later remarried in 1991 to Mrs. Agnes Kincaid Turner of Granville where he has since resided. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Granville, and was very active in Granville Rotary. His philosophy of life was 'Need'.
Surviving are his wife, Agnes (Kincaid) Norris of Granville; sons and daughters-in-law, Howard K. (Kathy) Norris of Leeland, MI, and Richard G. (Sandy) of Champaign Urbana, IL; daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne N. (Tom) Speakman of Stillpond, MD, and Nancy J. (Jim) Stern of Bellhaven, VA; step-daughter, Maggie (Gil) Barno of Granville, and step-son, Gordon (Page) Humphreys of Leland, NC; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
