A private graveside service for Dr. Irving A. Nickerson, 83, of Granville will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville with Center Star Lodge #11 and the Licking County Veteran's Alliance participating.
Dr. Nickerson was born March 20, 1924 in Utica, New York to the late Percy A. and Clara (Regetz) Nickerson.
During WWII, he served in the European Theater of Operations as a B-17 lead navigator with the 15th Air Force, U.S. Army Air Corps. For his many combat missions over Germany, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and many other decorations.
A 1953 graduate of The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Dr. Nickerson interned in Portland, Oregon, then moved to Granville in 1954 where he opened his own private practice. He founded the Granville Medical Center in 1965, served as Director of Student Health at Denison University's Whisler Hospital, and as staff physician at Licking Memorial, and several other hospitals in Ohio. Striving to emulate the legendary horse-and-buggy doctor, he was one of the last in central Ohio to regularly make housecalls. Before retiring, he circled the globe twice while serving aboard the deep ocean research ship Joides Resolution.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, June (Hartshorne) Nickerson; sons Fred (Tammy) Nickerson of Granville, George Nickerson (Karen Olson) of Columbus; grandchildren, Mark (Gwen) Nickerson of Singapore, Quentin Nickerson of Delaware, OH and Annie (Chad) Bowers of Springboro, OH; great-grandson Ryan Bowers; sister, Marguerite French of Granville, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Tommy, and one sister, Grace Kerchner. McPeek Funeral Home in Granville is assisting the family with arrangements.
