A private graveside service will be held for James B. Loats, 46, of Granville with Rev. Karen J. Chakoian as celebrant. The family will receive friends from 4-7 P.M. Thursday, May 14, 2015 in Heritage Hall at First Presbyterian Church, 110 W. Broadway, Granville.

Jim was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1968 to Ken V, and Martha "Marcy" Loats. He died Friday, May 8, 2015 in Granville as the result of an automobile accident.

A dedicated biology educator, Jim taught at Central Ohio Technical College in Newark for the last 11 years. He earned his M.A. from Harvard in Molecular Genetics and did his undergraduate work at Hope College where he met his future wife, Carrie A. Maples.

A good, loving, and patient man, Jim will be remembered for his sense of humor and ability to make others laugh. He was a passionate sci-fi fan rooted in Star Trek and the works of Tolkein and Pratchettt which he loved to read. He enjoyed gaming, building Legos with his sons, had a natural ability to get babies to sleep, and was loved by cats where ever he went.

In addition to his parents and wife of 23 years, Carrie Loats, surviving are his sons, Jason and Aaron Loats; brother, Steve Loats; sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Tony Zimmermann and nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the COTC Premier Faculty and Staff Scholarship Fund, C/O Development Office 1179 University Dr., Newark, OH 43055 or the James B. Loats' Children's Scholarship Fund care of any Park National Bank.
