Calling hours for Jean H. “Cass” Gowans of Granville will be held 2 p.m. -5 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect St., Granville, OH. A private burial will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery. A celebration of her life will be held in Heritage Hall at the First Presbyterian Church, 110 W. Broadway, Granville, 3-5 p.m., Wednesday, May 17.
Cass died Saturday, May 6, 2017, at the Selma Markowitz Care Center in Newark. She was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to the late Morton H. and Charlotte (Sheffield) Cassidy.
Mrs. Gowans was a graduate of Northfield School for Girls and Denison University and taught in Columbus and Granville Schools for 29 years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a Golden Circle member of Delta Delta Delta, TWIG #19, Ohio Teachers Association, and Jyestha Club. Awards include Jennings Scholar, National Finalist for Elementary Teacher of the Year, Dow Chemical Professional Excellence in Education, and the Jody Van Tine Award.
Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Jay and Suzan of Newark, OH and Scott and Amy of Granville; two grandchildren, Raithe and Alex; brother, Stewart Cassidy of Arizona; niece, nephew, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gowans was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Walter G. Gowans, and two sisters, Barbara Luoma and Margaret Crocker.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church or to the Granville Exempted Village School District, 130 N. Granger Street, Granville, OH 43023, for the Granville Elementary School Reading Resource Room.
