Jeannette Krieg Drake was born to Laurence and Helen Krieg on September 10, 1918, in Newark, Ohio. She graduated from Newark High School in 1936 and from Denison University in 1940. She and Norman K. Drake (deceased) met when he was in officer’s training at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, and she was attending Traphagan School of Design in New York City. They were married in Newark on June, 13, 1942, and traveled across the country several times to places where Norman, a Captain in the U.S Army Signal Corps, was stationed during World War II.
Over her 106 years, Janie lived a full life as a mother, grandmother, teacher, and active church and community volunteer. When her three children, Barbara, Laurence and Robert, were young she served as Brownie Scout leader and Den Mother for their introduction to Girl and Boy Scouting. When the Drake family lived in Austin, Texas, they were members of Westminster Presbyterian Church where Janie served as a volunteer in the church nursery.
When the family moved to Granville, Ohio, Janie helped finance her children’s college educations by teaching kindergarten in the Granville Public Schools. She later attended The Ohio State University for further training and taught at the Starlight School for developmentally disabled children. After her retirement, Janie joined the board of the Association for Retarded Citizens (now the Arc of Licking County). She served as board chair of that organization for several years. In 1987 she received the Granville Rotary Club’s Service above Self award.
Janie was an active member of The First Presbyterian Church in Granville for over 60 years where she sang in the choir, served as a deacon and an elder, lead the church’s Presbyterian Women’s Circle, and co-chaired the Church’s Capital Campaign when she was in her 80s.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Ziemann, her sons Laurence and Robert Drake; her grandchildren Stephen Marouchoc, Woody Drake, Eric Drake, Matthew Drake, Kristen Patterson and Marian Drake; and great grandchildren Kaitlin Marouchoc, Aiden Drake, Owen and Ezra Patterson, Louisa and Natalie Jensen, and Madeleine Drake. She was predeceased by her husband, her parents and both of her brothers.
Her family will fondly remember many Thanksgiving dinners and Christmas gatherings at her long-time home on North Pearl St. in Granville. Her grandchildren loved helping her bake cookies, overnights in her guest room and fun at her Hemlock Hollow log cabin. Janie was one of the first residents to move into Kendal (now Otterbein) when it opened in 2004. She served as Resident Council president in the community’s early days and knew every resident by name.
Janie will be remembered as a wonderful mother, grandma and friend and as a devoted church member and community volunteer. Her legacy of loving, caring and giving made this world a better place and will continue to do so through the lives of those she touched. We are so grateful!
Burial will be private. A Memorial Service will be scheduled at First Presbyterian Church of Granville at a later date.
Memorial gifts, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Healing Art Missions, P.O. Box 645, Granville, OH 43023 or the Licking County Coalition of Care, P.O. Box 8663, Newark, OH 43058-8663.
McPeek Hoekstra Hoskinson Funeral Home is honored to care for Janie and her family.
