John T. Evans

A memorial service celebrating the life of John T. Evans, 80, of Granville, will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, October 13, 2014 at McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect St., Granville. Private interment will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville.

John died Thursday, October 9, 2014 at Licking Memorial Hospital in Newark. He was born in Zanesville, Ohio to the late George R. and Gail (Slenker) Evans in 1934.

A 1952 graduate of Athens High School, John was class president and co-captain of the football team. He graduated in 1956 from Ohio University where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta and then served two years in the U.S. Army.

In 1995, John retired as a Division Manager with State Farm Insurance after 34 years of service. He was past president and served on the board of directors for the International Association of Arson Investigators, which presented him with the George "Al" Eisnaugle Award in 1985, for his outstanding contribution to the suppression of the crime of arson in Ohio.

John will be remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor, and Bobcat pride. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with family.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Patricia (Ley) Evans; daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Carlos McElfresh; grandchildren, Sarah Davis, Michael (Stephanie) Smith, Alex (Morgan) Smith, and John McElfresh; great grandchildren, Wesley, Nicholas, Aidan, Coen, Hannah, and Evan; brother and sister-in-law, David and Nancy Evans; sister, Ruth Rose; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Barbara Ley and sister-in-law, Barbara DeBoard Ley; many nieces and nephews. ; and family friends, Larry and Gini Wiseman. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his daughter, Diana Evans, who died September 26, 1984 and his sister, Nancy Anders.

The family will receive friends Sunday, October 12, 2014 from 2 to 5 P.M. at the McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home in Granville.
