JOSEPH WALLACE MACLEAN MARCH 3, 1903 -APRIL 16, 2007
A memorial service for Joseph W. MacLean, 104, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 19, 2007, at the First Presbyterian Church, 110 W. Broadway, Granville, with the Rev. Thom Lamb officiating. He will be inurned in the family plot at the Newton Centre, MA Cemetery. Mr. MacLean died April 16, 2007 at Flint Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Newark. He was born March 3, 1903, in Boston, MA. the eldest of four children born to the late Ella Frances (Wilson) and William Wallace MacLean. After finishing high school in Hanover, N.H., Mr. MacLean moved to Cleveland, OH where he was employed in the Superintendent's Dept, at the Cleveland Museum of Art until 1923 when he became an apprentice compositor at the Britton Printing Company. He married Louise S. (Polly) Hellman on August 29, 1929. They moved to Mansfield, OH in 1931 where Mr. MacLean was Co-owner and Secretary-Treasurer at The Buckeye Press. He sold his interest in the company in 1942 and became Plant Manager at Meisse Laboratories, manufacturer of bronze bushings for aircraft engines and other precision-machined components. After WWII he was an advertising account executive at Coleman Todd and Associates. He became Vice-President in 1958. He later worked for Chapel and Associates from 1967 until his retirement in 1972. Mr. MacLean received the 1968 Silver Medal of the Marketing Club of North Central Ohio for his outstanding contributions to the profession of advertising. During his 37 years in Mansfield, Mr. MacLean served on various civic and cultural committees, including the Springfield Township Zoning Board, acting as Chairman for several years, where he was guided by his interest in environmentally sound development. He was also on the Cultural Committee of the Richland Foundation, and a member of the Mansfield Men's Garden Club. Mr. MacLean was instrumental in the organization and operation of the Mansfield Fine Arts Guild. He was Chairman of the first May Show and worked on the committee to establish a permanent gallery to bring good art exhibits to Mansfield on a regular basis. He served as President for two years, as a Director for 12 years, and as Exhibition Chairman for 14 years. After his retirement in 1972, Mr. and Mrs. MacLean moved to Orleans, MA, where he was active in the local chapter of AARP. He served as an officer, editor of the monthly newsletter, and helped establish two Candlepin Bowling Leagues. He bowled until his was 98. In 2002, he came to live at Chestnut House in Newark, OH. He is survived by daughters and son-in-law, Judith Armstrong of Eugene, OR, and Jean and Alan Jankowski of Granville, OH; one sister, Miriam Pollack of Atlanta, GA; five granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Polly, and two brothers, Donald Wilson and Walter Kenneth.
