Ken V. Loats

A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 19, 2023 at  the First Presbyterian Church 110 W. Broadway, Granville, Ohio 43023  with Rev. Karen J. Chakoian as celebrant.

Ken was born March 18, 1936, in Belmond, Iowa to the late Benjamin and Viola (Mennenga) Loats. Born and raised on the family farm, his childhood shaped his values of hard work, dedication to family, and an appreciation for the natural sciences.

Ken served in the U. S. Army.

He graduated from Central College in Pella, Iowa.  He obtained his master’s degree from the University of Iowa and his Ph. D. from The Ohio State University.

Ken was a dedicated Professor of Biology at Denison University from 1968- 1999.

An avid sportsman, Ken enjoyed golf and a good pick-up game of basketball at Denison. Ken also enjoyed visiting numerous national parks with his wife and children and had a special fondness for the beautiful parks in Utah.

In addition to his parents, Ken is also preceded in death by his beloved son, Jim Loats in 2015; brother, Fred and sister, Marian.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Martha “Marcy” (Mullican) Loats, whom he married on June 12, 1965; a son, Stephen Loats; daughter, Sarah (Anthony) Zimmermann; daughter-in-law, Carrie Loats; grandchildren, Jason, Aeryn, Carina, and Max; siblings, Donna Heivilin and Mark Ouverson.
