Lewis S. Mounts

A memorial service will be held for Lewis Smith Mounts, 83, of Newark, at 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 17, 2013 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 102 E. Broadway, Granville with the Rev. Stephen J. Cramer and Rev. Charles C. Smith, III officiating. A private graveside service with full military honors will be conducted at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville where Lew will be buried beside his first wife, Joyce Mounts. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 16, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the CHURCH.

Lewis ("Lew") Smith Mounts passed away peacefully on Monday, May 13, 2013, at Kobacker Home Ranch Hospice House in Columbus, after a courageous battle of four kinds of cancer since August, 2010.Lew was born on August 2, 1929, in LaPorte, IN. Lew was the son of Ward and Olive (Smith) Mounts. Lew graduated from New Carlisle (IN) High School in 1947. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army ROTC program, then graduated from Purdue University with a B.S. degree in chemical engineering in 1954. While at Purdue, he met and married Joyce Whitmer on August 23, 1952. They celebrated 37 years together until her death in 1990, after a long battle with cancer.After graduating from Purdue, Lew went to work for The Dow Chemical Company in Midland, MI. In 1964, he moved his family to the Netherlands for a two-year assignment. During this time, he and his family traveled throughout Europe. In 1977, Lew and his family moved to Granville, OH, where he worked in Dow's newly opened Research Center. He retired from Dow in 1986. During his Dow career, he traveled extensively through the United States, Europe and Japan.After his retirement, Lew and Joyce were able to spend time together playing golf, sailing with friends on Lake Charlevoix in Michigan, and traveling.Lew was a kind, intelligent and gentle man who served his country and community where he volunteered as a teenage and adult Sunday School and confirmation class teacher, and led Girl Scout troops on out-of-state back packing trips. He volunteered as treasurer of Centenary Church for 16 years. For the past seven years, he also served as treasurer of the Second Presbyterian Church in Newark. For many years, Lew and his close friend, Buck Sargent, were in charge of the Mother-Daughter banquet at Centenary Church where they cooked their famous "Buckalew" chicken. He also delivered Meals-on-Wheels from Centenary Church from 1977 to 2010. He volunteered with the Food Pantry at Second Presbyterian Church. Lew was the president of the Tall Oaks Homeowners Association since the early 1990's. He was involved in many other charitable organizations, such as the Cancer Drive, the March of Dimes, and Hospice Children's Bereavement Camp. Since 1992, one of his favorite times to volunteer was on the Props Committee for the 20th Century Club's biennial "Flyer". He was also involved in many clubs and organizations, including the Alfretta Club, Dinner Dance Club, Centum Dance Club, The Granville Fellowship's euchre club, Licking County Aging, and he helped his wife, Sue at the Granville Garden Club's annual Daffodil Show.Lew was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church since 1977. He was also a member of the Terre Coupee Lodge #204, New Carlisle, IN. He was the High Priest of the Midland, MI chapter of the Royal Arch Masons, Bay City Consistory, Bay City, MI. He was involved with Newark Maennerchor and was a Freedom Years member. He was the secretary of the Industrial Golf League for many years. He was involved with the Moundbuilders Country Club, Amvets Post 51 in Thornport, OH, and a Monday night Bridge Club, which he started in 1977.

He was an avid bridge player, enjoyed tennis, skiing, bowling, puzzles, euchre, playing dominoes, dancing, traveling, and his favorite sport, golf. Sue and Lew spent several years dancing with Arnett Howard in Jamaica.

Lew is survived by his second wife of 22 years, Sue Henry-Mounts, whom he married on August 23, 1991. He is also survived by his children, Sue (Rowan) Smith of West Branch, MI, Sandy (John) Anderson of Port St. Lucie, FL and Mike (Diane) Mounts of Midland, MI, his step children, Nancee (Jay) Smith of Kennesaw, GA, Doug Henry (fiancAC.e Kathy Kennedy) of Granville, OH, Brad Henry of Columbus, OH, and Lucinda (Josh) Henry-Kirk of Portland, OR. Lew had seven grandchildren, three step grandchildren, five step great grandchildren and he was excitedly expecting twin great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and Sue's brothers-in-law and their wives, Tom, Sally, Tink and Linda Henry, along with many wonderful friends.
