A funeral service celebrating the life of Mary E. Jonaitis, 86, of Granville will be held at 10:30 a.m.Thursday, February 3, 2011 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 102 E. Broadway, Granville with the Rev. Stephen J. Cramer officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville.
Mrs. Jonaitis passed away peacefully at home, with her family by her side, on Saturday, January 29, 2011. She was born April 28, 1924 in Salisbury, North Carolina to the late Henry Lee and Annie Jane (Cooper) Cloer.
Retiring in 1991 from Granville Elementary, Mary previously taught in the Heath School System, as a missionary teacher in Taichung, Taiwan for five years, and at Kernersville High School in North Carolina. She earned her B.A. in Education from Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky and often said that children brought her the most joy. She was honored by Granville Schools for her dedication with the Jody Van Tine Award.
A 50 plus year member of Centenary United Methodist Church, Mary also enjoyed belonging to the Tulip Circle, Granville Music Club, and Winter Picnic. She will be remembered as a sweet, soft spoken, and caring friend and neighbor whose talent and love for baking will be missed by all. More than an educator, Mary was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, and adoring grandmother.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Glen Perry; grandchildren, Ben and Maria Perry; daughter Tia Jonaitis; sisters, Edna Winecoff and Thelma Brown; nieces and nephews, Teresa Cutshaw, Debbie Cloer, Jimmy Cloer, Danny Winecoff, Gloria Winecoff and Judy Livingston. Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years Stanley Jonaitis; two brothers, Russell and Jimmy Cloer; nephew, Donald Brown; and niece, Jewell Beck.
