A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Rita Meteer, 85, of Virginia Beach, VA, formerly of Granville, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at The Church of St. Edward the Confessor, 785 Newark-Granville Rd., Granville, with Msgr. Paul P. Enke as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Lockbourne, Ohio.
Rita passed away November 28, 2009 at our Lady of Perpetual Help in Virginia Beach. She was born July 4, 1924 in Columbus, Ohio to the late Lawrence J. and Jesse (Looker) Corcoran.
A graduate of our Lady of Victory High School in Columbus, Rita was devout in her faith and fostered that same devotion in her children. She was a member of The Church of St. Edward the Confessor in Granville and served with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. She also volunteered for Hospice of Central Ohio.
Rita, fiercely Irish Catholic, was graced with great wit, a profound fondness of words, and a love of lively discussion on politics and religion. She was a loving mother who taught her children to believe in themselves, to be kind to the less fortunate, and to never sing at the dinner table. Rita was kind to all she knew and was the fountain of wisdom and sound advice for friends and family. Her devoted husband, Chuck, was the Sales Executive, but Rita could work a room better than most. She was most proud of her efforts in Tennessee in getting Jack Kennedy elected President in 1960. Rita's children are most proud of her devotion to them, her husband, her Church, and her faith for her entire life. All of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren will miss her wonderful, loving smile and the sparkle in her eyes.
Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Charles L. (Sonny) Meteer of Atlanta, GA, Thomas and Janet Meteer of Rocky Ridge, MD, and Robert F. and Sue Meteer of Sunset Beach, NC; daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Ernest Weller, and Jane Theresa and Glenn Jungen, both of Kitty Hawk, NC; 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Florence Summy of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and Lee Meteer of St. Louis, MO; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Charles L. Meteer, who died in 1997, and two brothers, Robert John and Msgr. Lawrence J. Corcoran.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the church where a wake service will be conducted at 6 p.m. Arrangements are in the care of McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home in Granville. Online condolences may be expressed at www.mcpeekhoekstra.com.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Center, 135 Wilson Street, Newark, Ohio 43055 or to Hospice of Central Ohio, 2269 Cherry Valley Rd., Newark, Ohio 43055.
