A memorial service celebrating the life of Mary Agnes Spessard, 91, of Granville, will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, January 4, 2010, at Centenary United Methodist Church, 102 E. Broadway, Granville, with the Rev. Stephen J. Cramer officiating. A private graveside service will be held at College Cemetery on the campus of Denison University.
Agnes died Monday, December 28, 2009, at Licking Memorial Hospital in Newark. She was born September 5, 1918, in Westerville, Ohio, to the late Rev. Edward H. and Verda (Miles) Dailey.
As a preacher's daughter, Agnes moved 14 times during her childhood. She graduated from Otterbein College in 1940, with an English major and biology and physical education minors. She enjoyed creative writing, reading, and being physically active. She met Dwight R. Spessard at Otterbein College, whom she would later marry on February 14, 1943. She taught at St. Mary's of the Springs and was also secretary to the chemistry department at Case Western Reserve.
With a positive outlook on life and a great sense of humor, Agnes used her many talents and musical gifts. She sang in choirs and in the Licking County Chorus, played in Mrs. Jeanne's marimba and recorder groups, and played the piano. She also will be remembered for her adventurous spirit, love of family, and kindness.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Sue Spessard; daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Frank Schramm; grandchildren and their spouses, Heather and Brett Eades, Heidi and Cody Young, Andy Spessard, Michelle and Glenn Williams, and Mike Schramm; and great-grandchildren, Lily and Bailey Eades, and Olivia and Myles Young.
