Mildred L. Shumway

A graveside service for Mildred L. Shumway, 91, of Heath, formerly of Granville, will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville with Pastor Mark Pierce officiating. A memorial service celebrating her life will follow at 11:00 A.M. at the McPEEK-HOEKSTRA FUNERAL HOME, 133 S. Prospect Street, Granville.

Midge was born April 6, 1920 in Granville to the late Daisy Forest (Marlow) and George Hayes Wright. She died April 3, 2012 at Chapel Grove Inn, Heath.

A 1938 graduate of Granville High School, Midge was employed at Denison University where she worked in the Printing Office and was also a Host at the Denison Guest House for 18 years.

Never knowing a stranger, Midge had an outgoing personality and was a friend to all. She always remembered birthdays. Midge was a Master Gardner, excellent cook, and quilter. She also enjoyed golfing and family time.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law; David L. Shumway and Kathleen Thornton of Newark, and John E. and Julia Shumway of Westlake; daughter and son-in-law; Chris and Daniel Hurley of Gahanna; grandchildren and their spouses; David Shumway of Florida, Jacob Shumway of Columbus, Nathan and Judy Shumway of San Antonio, TX, Tom and Stephanie Shumway of Columbus, Margot Shumway of Washington D.C., Sarah and Josiah Royse of Worthington, and Josh and Susan Hurley of Raleigh, NC; great-grandchildren, Jenelle, Griffin, Bennett, Adam, Jack, Luke, and one soon to arrive.

In addition to her parents, Midge was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Arthur M. Shumway, who died May 22, 1993; brother, Howard Wright; and sisters, Thelma Pheneger and Frances Carlile.

Family will receive friends Friday, April 6, 2012 from 4 to 7 P.M. at the funeral home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.mcpeekhoekstra.com.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Newark Fire Dept, Granville Fire Dept., Bedford Twp. Fire Dept., or Hospice of Central Ohio.
