R. Elliott Stout, Ph.D., 71, a retired Denison University professor, died Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at the Rhodes I.C.U. at The Ohio State University Medical Center, after a courageous, seven-year battle with leukemia. He was born December 31, 1938 in St. Louis, MO to the late Harry Leon and Elvira (Magaz) Stout.
During his graduate and undergraduate studies at The Ohio State University, he was a well-established actor and opera singer. A very dedicated professor, Elliott taught theatre and cinema at Denison University for 37 years until retiring in 2003. Dr. Stout became the theatre historian and founder of the cinema program during his tenure at Denison University.
Elliott greatly enjoyed traveling abroad; especially the time he ventured to Northern Cyprus accompanied by his wife and daughter to make films. Elliott was a Middle Eastern history buff and known to many as the 'Quiz Master'. His other hobbies included swimming and table tennis.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, P. Ann (Shawen) of Granville; daughter, Amy Catherine Stout and her partner, Maura Powers, of Boston, MA; grandson, Martin Paul Powers of Boston, MA; brother, Frederic Leonard and his companion, Lisa Ryan, of San Francisco, CA; aunts Consuelo Garcia and Teresa Yochum both of St. Louis, MO; and beloved cat and dog, 'Sophy' and 'Papagena'.
Friends may call 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, August 14, 2010 at the McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect St., Granville. A private graveside service will be held at College Cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed at www.mcpeekhoekstra.com.
