Richard A. Gosnell

A graveside service celebrating the life of Richard A. Gosnell, age 93, of Newark, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 5, at Welsh Hills Cemetery with Pastor Casey Wilson officiating.  Friends may call prior to the graveside service from 12:45-1:45 p.m. at McPeek Hoekstra Hoskinson Funeral Home, 133 South Prospect Street in Granville.

Richard was born March 25, 1930 in Granville, Ohio to the late Elmer M. and Kathryn (Gill) Gosnell. He passed away on December 25, 2023 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center (operated by Hospice of Central Ohio).

A 1948 graduate of Granville High School, Richard was a true “Renaissance man” in that he not only was a skilled carpenter, plumber, electrician, painter, and well driller, but he also loved to read and was an excellent sketch artist. He retired from Denison University Physical Plant after 40+ years of service. An avid outdoorsman, he was an accomplished horseman, and an expert marksman who hunted, fished, trapped, and trained hunting dogs. He also loved bird watching, flower and vegetable gardening, and hunting mushrooms. He was a lifelong fan of OSU basketball and football, and the Cincinnati Reds, as well as following the sports careers of his sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Richard was someone who naturally drew people to him with his engaging personality and great sense of humor.

He is survived by three sons, Thomas A. (Lynn) Gosnell of Walton, Kentucky, John L. (Lori) Gosnell of Marion, and Richard L. (Susan) Gosnell of Granville; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Marie (Messino) Gosnell, who died November 24, 2014; a son, David L. Gosnell, on February 27, 2021; a grandson, Shane Gosnell; and a brother, Fred Gosnell
