A memorial service for Richard L. Hamann, 76, of Granville, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 102 E. Broadway, Granville with Chaplain Jeff Smith and Rev. Stephen J. Cramer officiating.
Richard, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home on Sept. 7, 2009 after a brief illness. He was born May 3, 1933 in Ashville, North Carolina to the late Rudolph and Helen (Tallman) Hamann.
Richard retired in 1987 from the Licking County Health Department as a registered sanitarian. Previously, he had been employed by the city of Newark, Morgan, and Perry County Health Departments. Richard graduated from the Carson Long Military Institute in PA and furthered his education at The Ohio State University with a B.S. in Agriculture. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Richard was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Granville, F.A.& M Center Star Lodge #11, Knights Templar, Tehran Grotto, Licking and Knox County Conservationalist Club where he served as past president in Knox County, and lifetime member of the NRA. An avid outdoorsman, Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and being in the woods. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Peg (Tanner) Hamann of Granville; daughters and sons-in-law, Susan Hamann of Newark, Emily and Spencer Brown of Granville, and Ellen and Rick Libertini of Powell; son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Michele Hamann of Newark; grandchildren, Anne (Chad) Bowers of Dayton, Mark (Gwen) Nickerson of Singapore, Caleb, Jacob, and Grace Brown of Granville, Mary and Jesse Libertini of Powell, Zachary and Ashley Hamann of Newark; great grandchild, Ryan Bowers; several nieces and nephews, and faithful feline companion, 'Sophie'.
In addition to his parents, Richard is preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis Gardner.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect St, Granville. A Masonic service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. prior to calling hours. Online condolences may be expressed at www.mcpeekhoekstra.com.
