Robert S. Carpenter

April 27, 1923 — March 10, 2008

There will be a private family service for Robert S. Carpenter, 84, of Newark.  Mr. Carpenter passed away peacefully March 10, 2008 at the Selma Markowitz Center, operated by Hospice of Central Ohio.

Bob was born April 27, 1923 in Marion, to the late Charles M. and Nita (Coates) Carpenter.  During WWII, he served his country in the U.S. Navy as a signal man.

A 1948 graduate of Yale University with a degree in Botany, Bob did his graduate work at The Ohio State University where he was a member of Delta Sigma Phi.  He was employed by Parke-Davis as a pharmaceutical representative and taught middle school mathematics for Newark City Schools. After his retirement from teaching, Bob worked for the Licking County Dept. of Human Services.  He loved to golf, cut firewood, and work jigsaw puzzles.

Surviving are his daughters Sue Carpenter of Westerville, and Patricia Carpenter of Baldwinsville, NY; brothers and sisters-in-law Jim and Laura Carpenter of Marion, and Bill and Donna Carpenter of Ostrander; sisters and brother-in-law Mary Lou Hoover of Columbus, Ruth Goedicke of Richwood, and Carol and Bill Hosterman of Orient; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Mary J. (Hughes) Carpenter; one son, David Robert Carpenter; one brother Don Carpenter; and one sister Dorothy Garwood.

Arrangements are in the care of McPeek Funeral Home, Granville.
