Robert G Kouyoumjian

April 26, 1923 — January 3, 2011

Dr. Robert G. Kouyoumjian, professor emeritus of the Department of Engineering at Ohio State University, passed away on Monday, January 3, 2011, after a short illness. He was 87.

Prof. Kouyoumjian was born in Cleveland in 1923 and received his undergraduate education at Harvard, MIT, and Ohio State University. After having received his PhD. in physics from Ohio State in 1953, Prof. Kouyoumjian taught electrical engineering at OSU for over 40 years which included research at the ElectroScience Laboratory. His wife Beatrice preceded him in death in April of 2010.

World-renowned in his field, Prof. Kouyoumjian was inducted in the National Academy of Engineering-the highest honor an engineer can achieve-in1995 for his work on the Uniform Geometrical Theory of Diffraction. He also received the Centennial and the Third Millennium Awards from the Institute of Electronic Engineers.

During WWII, Prof. Kouyoumjian served in the Air Force as a captain.

Surviving are his daughter Kathryn Jones and son-in-law Mark Jones, a general surgeon, of East Lansing, Michigan; son, John D. Quimjian, an orthopedic surgeon, and daughter-in-law, Lina Quimjian of Granville, Ohio; four grandsons, Michael Quimjian, Robert Quimjian, Evan Jones, and Andrew Jones; step-son, Lawrence Shipp, CEO of Heartland Manufacturing Group, Kansas City, Missouri.

A memorial service will be held at Overbrook Presbyterian Church, 4131 N. High St., Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.
