A private graveside service will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville for Ruth Hayes Elliott, 94, of Hilliard, formerly of Granville.
Ruth died May 4, 2009 at Glenmont in Hilliard, Ohio. She was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey May 26, 1914 to the late Roswell Farnum Hayes and Clarice Jeffrey. Following her marriage to Stanley J. Elliott in 1941, she and her husband lived in Forest Hills, NY, Summit, NJ, and Chatham, NJ before moving to Granville in 1967.
Mrs. Hayes attended Ridgewood High School and Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ. In 2002, she was honored as a Distinguished Alumnae of Centenary College. She also studied interior design at the New York School of Interior Design. She worked several years for other designers, and then opened her own interior design business in Summit which she operated until moving to Granville.
Ruth enjoyed working with the Girl Scouts, teaching swimming, and coaching synchronized swimming at the Summit YMCA. She was also involved in swimming and ice skating activities at Beacon Hill Club in Summit.
A water color artist, Ruth's paintings have been exhibited at numerous Ohio art shows. Many of her watercolors are in private collections and one is in the permanent collection of the Zanesville Art Center. She was a member of Licking County Art, Zanesville Art Center, Southeast Ohio Water Media Society, Central Ohio Watercolor Society, associate member of Ohio Watercolor Society, and a life member of the Granville Garden Club. She was also a member of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston and of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Newark, where she served as First Reader, Second Reader, President, Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher, and Reading Room Librarian.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; brother, Stewart Jeffrey Hayes; and sister, Kathryn Hayes Moseley.
Surviving are her nieces, Terry Jo Moseley Benson and Sherry Lou Moseley; nephews, William Stewart Hayes and David Wayne Hayes; and six great-nieces and nephews.
