A celebration of life for the Reverend Edward N. Burdick 2nd, 92, of Newark and Granville, will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at St. Luke's Church, 107 E. Broadway, Granville with the Rev. Dr. Stephen H. Applegate as celebrant.
Edward died November 18, 2016 at the Selma Markowitz Inpatient Care Center at Licking Memorial Hospital in Newark, Ohio. He was born December 15, 1923 in Westerly, Rhode Island to H. Russell and Prudence Chesebro Fairbrother Burdick. He was a graduate of Westerly High School, Yale University and Union Theological Seminary.
He enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 and became an officer, achieving the rank Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps. During his service he served as a pilot trainer and attained over 1000 hours of flight time.
Ed excelled in the sports of track and field, particularly as a sprinter. He was a member of the Yale University varsity track relay team. His team won the ICAAAA Championship in Madison Square Garden, New York City in February 1948, with a time of 3m.22.4s in the mile relay.
He was ordained to the priesthood in the Episcopal Church, and served as rector of St. Luke’s Church, Granville, Ohio from 1960 through 1989. He was a founder of and/or instrumental in the creation of local organizations including Welsh Hills School and The Food Pantry Network of Licking County. He worked for peace, understanding and justice during his life through his ministry and other activities including CROP walks, the Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign, and the fight against the death penalty. As a student in seminary in the 1950s, he was a part of the East Harlem Protestant Parish project serving East Harlem, New York, particularly the youth there.
Ed Burdick was remarkable as both student and teacher. Until the end of his days he maintained an active inquiry into the nature of our human existence, and took particular delight in ongoing developments in the study of the cosmos, astrophysics, and human history.
Surviving him are his children, Elizabeth N. Burdick-Romero and David N. Burdick; grandchildren, Francisco A. Burdick-Romero (Julia Romero) and Luci Denkewalter Burdick; nephew David S. Neill, Jr., niece Leslie Neill Thomas, and his great-grandson Caspar F. Romero.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sarah Griffith Burdick, and his wife and partner Nancy Neill Burdick.
