Wilma R. Philipps Hughes

A funeral service for Wilma R. Philipps-Hughes, 79, of Heath, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 9, 2009,  at McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect St., Granville, with the Rev. Leon Forte officiating. Burial will follow at Newark Memorial Gardens.

Wilma left this world as she lived it, going out with a "bang" on the 4th of July, 2009.  She was born May 1, 1930 in Granville to the late Reah Grace (Evans) and Thomas W. Philipps.

A graduate of The Ohio State University, Wilma studied Education and Business.  She was a lifetime member of O.E.S. Licking Chapter # 551 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Wilma was also a member of the Newark Eagles, Moose, Druids, American Legion, and VFW Auxillary.

Genuinely proud to be an American, Wilma was politically active and served on the Republican Central Committee.  She enjoyed her Thursday Lunch Bunch, NASCAR, Cleveland Browns and O.S.U football, fishing, gambling, and most of all, drinking beer.

Beloved mother of sons and daughter-in-law, John F. and Jill Roberts of Murietta, Calif., and Robert V. and Cooky Hughes of The Plains, OH; daughters and sons-in-law, Bobbi Roberts-Lyons and Orville Lyons of Nelsonville, Kathy and Jeff Kinser of Heath, and Sheila A. Flowers of Heath; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lloyd  and Rhea Philipps of Granville, and Tommy and Aileen Philipps of Heath; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews;  her close friends, Connie Spalding and Janet Henderson; her many friends at the Mill Wheel; and canine companion, 'Ziggy'.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Hughes, who died May 24, 1989; one grandson, Spencer Philipps Roberts; one great-granddaughter, MaKell Alvis; one brother, Samuel Philipps; one sister, Mary Philipps Villars; and faithful canine companion, 'Sparky'.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home where Eastern Star services will be conducted at 5:45 p.m. Online condolences may be expressed at www.mcpeekhoekstra.com .
