Zbigniew Raciszewski, 85, of Granville, Ohio, passed away on July 14, 2007.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 24, at 12:00 p.m. at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, 785 Newark-Granville Road in Granville, with Monsignor Paul Enke officiating. A private graveside service was held at St. Joseph Cemetery in Newark.
Mr. Raciszewski was born January 20, 1922, in Uchanie, Poland, to the late Roman and Maria (Lapicka) Raciszewski. As a boy in Poland, he was enthusiastic and active in the Boy Scout movement. During World War II, he took part in the armed resistance against German occupiers.
Zbigniew studied at the Warsaw Agricultural University, and then immigrated to Canada in the early 1950's where he performed research at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon. He earned his PhD. in Chemistry from the University of Notre Dame. His professional experience included research at Research Centers of Union Carbide in Parma, Ohio, and South Charleston, West Virginia, which resulted in a number of scientific publications. As a senior editor between 1969 and 1985, he contributed to the building of chemical databases at the Chemical Abstracts Service of the American Chemical Society in Columbus, Ohio. He was fluent in five languages. In his retirement, he shared his deep knowledge of fine arts, especially classical music.
Mr. Raciszewski was a member of St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Granville, and was a former member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Columbus.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
His estate will establish the Zbigniew Raciszewski Fellowship Foundation at the University of Pennsylvania, The Wharton School, to provide scholarships for students from Poland.
